Concussion management

What is a concussion?

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that occurs from a blow to the head that briefly disrupts the normal function of the brain. It can be caused by an athletic injury, a fall, or accident. Concussions are not generally dangerous but require proper management to avoid severe complications and ensure full recovery.

Frequently asked questions

Any return to physical activity following the concussion should be taken very strictly under the guidance of a doctor. The procedure starts with rest to facilitate healing and then at least 24-48 hours without any repetition of symptoms. Thereafter, daily exercise like walking or cycling may be monitored, and then they can move on to sport-specific exercises. Only after passing through each level can you resume full activity together with the guidance of an expert.

If you or your child has suffered a head or body blow, look for signs and symptoms such as

  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Unsteady balance
  • Amnesia
  • Confusion
  • Nausea
  • Depression
  • Sensitivity to light, etc.

If any of these symptoms follow an injury, it is best to see a physician for diagnosis and treatment of the concussion.

Concussion therapy is a set of therapies combining therapies aimed at alleviating symptoms and facilitating recovery. The treatment process includes cognitive rest, physical therapy, vestibular therapy, cognitive rehabilitation, and strength and conditioning exercises. Nonetheless, a customized plan is also offered to enhance the recovery process.

Concussions cannot be prevented, but the utilization of headgear, the proper approach while playing, and safe practice will assist in evading reckless acts.
